Police Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs about Opioid Addiction Treatment and Harm Reduction: A Survey of Illinois Officers

The number of Americans who have died due to drug overdose has increased fivefold over the past 20 years. While police and other first responders find themselves on the front lines of this public health crisis, their views, knowledge, training, and department support vary. Myths and misconceptions persist regarding substance use disorders, treatment, recovery, and harm reduction. Researchers surveyed 248 local police officers across Illinois on their knowledge of addiction and the means to address it.
