Free Virtual Training: Amplifying Voices in Strangulation Cases

March 06, 2025

Join Kelsey McKay and the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence for a free, three-part virtual training series next week on March 10, 12, and 14 from 1:00pm-4:00pm

This comprehensive three-part training series equips advocates with the knowledge and tools to understand the dynamics of strangulation, enhance victim safety, and effectively support survivors within the legal system.

Part 1 | Understanding Strangulation: Risks, Reactions and Recognition In this session, participants will explore the significant risks associated with strangulation, a key indicator of escalating domestic violence and a strong predictor of homicide. Advocates will learn to recognize both visible and non-visible injuries, including the immediate and long-term physical and psychological impacts on survivors.

Part 2 | Strangulation Injustices: Lethality Risks and the Criminalization of Survivors
This session addresses the injustices survivors face in the criminal justice system, including credibility attacks and misconceptions surrounding self-defense. Participants will examine the alarming trend of domestic violence survivors being charged with crimes for defending themselves. Strategies will be provided for advocates to challenge biases, collaborate with defense attorneys, and leverage trauma-informed approaches to support their clients.

Part 3 | Transforming Practice: Moving from Proof to Prevention In the final session, advocates will learn to build partnerships with defense attorneys, prosecutors, and other stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive, trauma-informed response that prioritizes survivor safety. The course will also explore the profound impact of fear on victim behavior, leading to challenges in legal proceedings. Participants will leave empowered to advocate for systemic change, preventing the criminalization of survivors and promoting a more just and compassionate approach to domestic violence cases.

Registration closes Friday, March 7th.
